Digipak Phase 3: Front Cover

On today's episode of "team flaming hot cheetos is cursed", Khadijah our model backed out from the digipak photoshoot. But since we're used to things like this by now, Hira and I had already come up with a back up option. We used one of the shots from the music video that we both found to be really nice generally and also suitable for our cover. the screen capture in question I first opened the image and used the spot healing tool to fix some of the blemishes on the artist's face. Opening a new file, I set the dimensions to the standard digipak size (5.45" x 4.95"). Next, I dragged and dropped the selected image onto this file. Hira and I were conflicted between using the full face of the artist or an extreme close up on her mouth and the flower. So I made duplicate layers of the image, which I edited simultaneously so that we we would have two options to choose from at the end. I colourised the image and adjusted the hue and saturation to give us the d...

Digipak Phase 2: Planning

First things first we decided to go for a standard 4-panel digipak, with 5.5'' x 5.5'' dimensions.  Once we got that down, we started working on rough sketch of the front and back covers, the inlay and the CD, which was not an easy task to say the least, considering the diversity in styles of indie album visuals. Front Cover We came up with two ideas after brainstorming and browsing that we thought would work well with our concept. We decided to go with the second one, which was basically a multiple exposure, close up shot of the artist. We felt that this reflected the state of mind of the character in our music video is facing, as well as the way she juggled with her past and present self and what can be inferred of her future. Basically, it represented the dilemma and the confusion that we intended to show. The colour scheme would be a stark contrast of hot pink and black, like the lighting used in the dancing scene in the music video. The contrasting colour palette a...

Digipak Phase 1: Research & Analysis

Before starting on our actual design for our digipak, it was first important to analyse and carefully study digipaks of existing artists to get an idea of what they try to incorporate in them and why. The 1975 - The 1975 Front cover Since this was their first and self-titled album, the band, in a way, had opportunity to brand themselves in a certain way. However, they didn't feature themselves on the cover, as is the case commonly with pop artists. Rather, they aimed for a more stylistic element to make them recognisable - the neon rectangle (and the rectangle generally) became a motif for the band, and was also used in their second studio album, as well as in their music videos, concert stages etc. and has become a recognisable symbol of the band. The cover overall is pretty simplistic, and has a (literally) monotonous colour scheme, which may reflect the dark mood and character of most of their tracks. Also, the quirky typography alongside the neon frame adds more of a retro-esq...

Rough Cut In The Making

Hira started working on the editing and compiled the videos in one place. However, due to our school suddenly dropping our mock exam timetable less than three weeks before the exams, Hira and I had less and less time to meet up and work on the editing as we had initially planned. So after she had made a rough cut, I transferred the Premiere file from her laptop to mine and worked on the rough cut.  This is her working on the rough cut in school while I grace her with my presence: The first step was to organise all our selected footage into folders so that it would be easier for us to select them and import them into Premiere. It would also make locating videos according to the shotlist much easier. We divided the footage according to the locations where we shot them. This video is edited enough to be a rough cut but is too rough to be the first cut so consider it as a work in process. In the first 9 seconds, there is a series of cross-cuts and parallel editing, showing the girl in ...
